Chain link is the hardest-working fence there is. It's one of the most affordable ways to fence a yard, it lasts for decades, and it holds dogs, kids, and garden-raiding deer without needing much attention. It also lets the view through, which counts for a lot when the view is the Cascades. Plenty of homeowners in Central Oregon pick chain link for a dog run or a back property line and save cedar for the sections near the house that people actually see. We install and repair chain link across Bend, Prineville, and La Pine, on city lots and on acreage where a long run of fence has to stay affordable.
Below we cover where chain link works best, the options that make it look better than the old schoolyard fence, how we build it to stay tight, and how we repair it when something gives. For long runs of wire or rail on a few acres, also take a look at our ranch and acreage fencing. Quotes are free and come in writing.

Where Chain Link Makes Sense
The most common chain link jobs we see are dog runs and backyards for big dogs that would chew or jump a wood fence. It's also a good fit for garden enclosures to keep deer out, back and side property lines where looks matter less than cost, and fencing around shops, equipment yards, and storage areas. Because there are no boards to catch the wind, chain link stands up well to the gusts that blow over privacy fences every spring. Taller chain link with a top rail works well for keeping deer out of a garden. If you need privacy, chain link can still work: slats woven through the mesh block most of the view, though a wood or vinyl privacy fence is usually the better choice when privacy is the main goal.
Galvanized, Black, and Privacy Slats
Standard galvanized chain link is the classic silver fence. It's the most affordable option and the zinc coating keeps it from rusting for many years. Black vinyl-coated chain link costs a bit more but looks a lot better. It tends to disappear against trees and lawn, which is why many homeowners choose it for anything visible from the house or street. Both come in different heights and wire thicknesses, and a heavier wire is worth it for big dogs or high-traffic areas. Privacy slats come in several colors and slide in after the fence is up. We can also add a bottom tension wire or rail to stop dogs from pushing under the fence, which is the most common escape route.
How We Build a Chain Link Fence
A chain link fence depends on its terminal posts, meaning the corner, end, and gate posts. These take all the pulling force when the mesh is stretched, so they're heavier than the line posts and set deep in concrete to hold through the freeze and thaw. Before any digging, we walk the line with you, confirm where the property line sits, and call in a utility locate. Once the posts are set and the concrete has cured, the top rail goes on, then the mesh is stretched tight from end to end and tied off. A properly stretched fence doesn't sag between posts and won't bulge when a dog leans on it. Most residential chain link jobs are done in one to three days.

Chain link is easy to repair, which is one of its best features. Most damage is limited to one spot: a top rail bent by a falling branch, a section of mesh torn by a car or a determined dog, or a post knocked out of line. We can cut out a damaged piece of mesh and weave in a new one, replace a bent rail, and reset or replace a post without redoing the whole fence. Sagging mesh usually means the fence lost its tension, and we can restretch it. Gates on chain link often sag or stop latching as hinges wear out, and that's usually a quick fix.
